Nokia 9 PureView Hands-on Review: Camera-Heavy Phone That's So Last Year

Nokia received a lot of attention back when it launched theLumia 1020 for its best smartphone camera at the time. Since HMD revived the Nokia brand, there hasn't been a phone worthy of praising its camera prowess until now.

Nokia 9 PureView

Nokia has finally pulled the wraps off of the heavily rumored Nokia 9 and while most of the specs were long-known for the most part, specific details about its five-camera setup were a secret well-guarded. Something to know about the camera on this phone is that not one of the cameras are wide nor telephoto.

That's because this phone isn't really intended for the casual photographer - its aimed at the professional or enthusiast photographer. You'll see why as you continue reading about the camera.

There's an amply-sized 6-inch display at the front with the in-display scanner - a modern biometric solution. Nokia aims to keep the software experience as vanilla as possible and it achieved this even with the new camera features that we're excited to tell you about.

What is the Nokia 9 PureView

Nokia has done something that has been missed over the last few years - it has created a flagship phone that focuses on the camera. Yes, the other components of a smartphone and the QHD display, the latest Snapdragon 845 processor, and a little bit of RAM and storage are part of the package as well. But this phone is all about the camera, and it does so with a variety of features including the aforementioned five cameras and AI processing.

You'll be happy to know that the camera is exclusive to the PureView branding, not just in this phone, but also in the Nokia 7.1 Plus and other new devices.

With this all-new camera setup, the Nokia 9 PureView combines an the 41-megapixel sensor with a 5-megapixel telephoto camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with an aperture of f/2.4.

Nokia's entry into the premium smartphone market with the Nokia 7.1 (top), 7.1 Plus (bottom), and the 6.1 Plus (bottom). HMD Global.

The Nokia 9 PureView has a glass back that houses the five cameras. We were actually impressed by the build of this device, despite how large it is - it actually feels good in your hand. Nokia uses a combination of 3D glass with a glass covering on top. We didn't have to prod it too much to see it. Nokia really wants you to hold the Nokia 9 PureView and use itscameras.

The 9 PureView is nothing spectacular to look at from the front. It doesn't have an edge-to-edge display and there's a big bezel at the top (big by recent standards, at least) with a camera, speaker and Nokia logo. It may not be a big notch, but it is a big eyesore that will show all the more next to an S10 with its in-display camera or the Mate 20 Pro with its overt notch.

The buttons are placed along the right edge - Power, volume up, volume down, and SIM/SD card reader - and they're easy to press. Of course, HMD is really excited about this in-display sensor so if you didn't check out its commercial, it would be difficult to find any buttons on this handset.

Hardware and Software

A reasonable amount of the rumors surrounding the Nokia 9 were spot on. It's a device built with care for the image sensor and the processing power. It uses a combination of four glass panels and a metal frame to create a polycarbonate unibody. The Nokia 9 PureView comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

The main selling point here is the five-camera setup at the back of the phone, each with its own setup, laser and phase-detection autofocus, optical image stabilization (OIS) and HDR. While Nokia has in the past focused on the optics, it appears it has realized there's no clear-cut winner in the AI image processing competition.

Camera Specs

HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela confirmed earlier in the year that the Nokia 9 PureView is not only a camera phone but also a pure visual experience as well. To achieve this, the company opted for five cameras to work in concert - each one of these features a lens of its own. The photos you'll see in this hands-on include a few pictures that show some of the exclusive shots you can expect in an upcoming article. Check out the official Nokia tweet below.

Jumping into the scene are the five Zeiss-tuned cameras that will be powering the device. A tweet about these cameras by Nokia's official handle gave us a few more details.

Barely a year after HMD Global revived the Nokia brand, this phone features a highly anticipated camera system with five cameras for the first time.

Camera Performance

This is where the phones first shows its weaknesses: camera performance. Just as impressive as the capabilities of the PureView camera that Nokia has used for years on its Lumia devices, this phone has the same basic camera setup. This is all business for professionals and enthusiasts, something Nokia claims that these people have been waiting for.

There's a few things you need to know: all the photos and videos you take through this camera are captured in RAW. If that's not interesting enough for you, then consider the fact that each of the five lenses do different things.

Conclusion

The Nokia 9 PureView is not the perfect smartphone. Its all-glass body is not transparent and the design is not as well-thought-out as the iPhone XS and the upcoming Galaxy S10. But this one's not for everyone - it's a highly specialized device for a very limited audience. The Nokia 9 is not the phone that the Nokia brand should be associated with, but it's the smartphone that the Nokia brand should represent right now. It's a glimpse into the future of Nokia handsets and a major step forward for the iconic Finnish brand.
